KUCHING: The national-level Malaysia Day celebration on Sep 16 at Padang Merdeka here will still carry on despite the city engulfed in haze.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said there was already a contingency plan ready.
“We will monitor the haze situation from time to time. If it gets worse, then we will use Plan B to continue the event,” he said.
Awang Tengah, who is also the chairman of the organising committee for Sarawak, said the working committee involving the federal government had already discussed and planned on the second plan.
He said this to reporters when met after attending the state-level Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s official birthday celebration at SJKC Chung Hua Serian yesterday.
However, he refused to elaborate further on what the second plan was and how it would be carried out.
Hosted by Kuching this year, the Malaysia Day celebration is themed ‘Sayangi Malaysiaku: Malaysia Bersih’.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail are expected to attend.
