KUCHING: The Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) squad are targeting the quarter-finals of the 79th King’s Gold Cup Championship which kicks off in Kedah today. SSC were voted in Group A along with Selangor, DBK FC, PDRM and MISC in the tournament which include 18 teams from all over Malaysia, including Singapore. Group B comprises N. Sembilan, Kelantan, Melaka, Pahang and ATM.
In Group C are Kingstown Klang, Terengganu, Singapore and Penang while Group D consists of Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Perlis and Kedah. SSC will open their campaign against Selangor at the Jitra Mini Stadium this afternoon at 4.45pm. According to SCC squad head coach Ahmad Fairuz Yunus, they have been preparing for the championship since August 12. “The team comprise Under 21 players. They are a combination of players from the SCC PC squad and Sarawak 2019 Youth Team,” Fairuz said.
“Our participation in the tournament is an exposure to our youths and our initial goal is to get to the quarter-finals,” he added. According to Fairuz, they have already played five friendly matches to gauge their line-up. In the matches, SCC won once, drew thrice and lost once. They beat the Sarawak Foundation 3-2, tied 2-2 with the Sarawak team 2-2 with Serian, drew 1-1 with the PDRM and lost 1-4 to the 3 Lion squad.
