KUCHING: A couple was killed and three others were injured in a collision between two cars at Jalan Astana early yesterday morning.
Recco Juiem, 33, and his wife Salome Michael Abang were killed on the spot in the 5.50am crash.
Recco and his wife, who were in a compact car, were heading for work when he lost control of his vehicle, which skidded and entered the opposite lane before colliding head-on with the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle.
“The husband and wife were trapped in their car and rescuers were summoned to extricate them. They were pronounced dead at the scene due to several head injuries by medical personnel.
“However, the three individuals who were the occupants of the 4WD vehicle, managed to exit the vehicle easily. They also suffered injuries,” said state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu when contacted yesterday.
The remains of Recco and his wife were taken to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) mortuary for further action.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” said Alexson.
State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) assistant operations director Tiong Ling Hii said the department received a distress call at 6.09am.
Firefighters from the Petra Jaya fire station were deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they immediately attended to the two victims pinned in their seats.
Tiong added the victims were extricated out of the wreckage by the firefighters using rescue tools. The occupants in the 4WD vehicle managed to exit the vehicle before the firefighters arrived.
