SANTUBONG: Residents of Kampung Pulau Salak will enjoy clean water supply soon.

According to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and Santubong Member of Parliament, Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the RM5.9 million project  is almost ready.

It is only waiting for electricity supply which will pump the water and channel it to all of the residents’ houses.

“Actually, the physical construction is completed and what’s left is to connect the electricity,” Wan Junaidi said while officiating the launching of the Rural Water Supply Project at Kampung Pulau Salak here yesterday.

The Minister also explained why the project took a long time to  complete.

Although it was planned in 2010 with an allocation of RM2.9 million, the project experienced some challenges that affected its progress, he said.

“A year after it was approved,  plans were made to locate a pathway. A road  being built in Kuching  complicated the project because it needed to go through the main road from Matang to Santubong.

“Once Sarawak Energy completes the supply of electricity within an estimated time of two weeks, water can be pumped to the tanks.  Once the process is completed, we will hand over the project from the contractor to the Public Works Department (JKR).

“From there, it will then be handed over to the state Rural Water Supply Department,” Wan Junaidi said, adding that 75 percent of the residents had already paid the deposits for  the water meters.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity and Pantai Damai state assemblyman, Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi thanked the residents for being patient about the project.
