KUCHING: Haikou University of Economics in Hainan Province is inviting Bumiputera students from Sarawak to pursue their bachelor degrees in various fields which would be fully sponsored by the university.

The courses offered include engineering, technicians, multimedia, communications, business and accounting which is of international standard. The courses are conducted in English.

Malaysia/China Association adviser Tnay Li Ping revealed that the university is expanding and welcomes international students to integrate and learn the rich cultures of respective countries.

“It is also due to the good relationship after Malaysia and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year,” said Tnay to the New Sarawak Tribune.

However, students are required to have the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) in Senior Three to qualify for the admission.

“Now there are many Bumi students in Chinese schools. It would be a good opportunity for them as they only need to pay monthly rental which is heavily subsidised. Each student needs to pay about RM120,” said Tnay.

The good thing, she added, was that since UEC is recognised in China, the students need not waste a year for foundation or sit for any entrance examination.

She also told that the university offers a twinning programme with a university in Germany.

Meanwhile, for the year 2020 intake, the university has offered six students to pursue their studies there.

Of the total, four students were from Sarawak – three from Kuching and one from Miri – who left last August.

As it was their first time going overseas, the students’ parents were invited to go at their own expense while the university sent representatives to show the parents around the campus.

Tnay revealed that this was a good opportunity for a student who never dreamt of pursuing higher education due to financial constraints.

“As long as they pass their UEC Senior Three, they are eligible to join,” she said.

Those interested for next year’s intake can contact Batu Kitang SUPP branch at telephone number 019-8199060.
