IPOH: Terengganu emerged winners of the ‘Men Core’ category of the 2019 National Sevens rugby championship after defeating Kelantan 24-5 in the final at Padang Ipoh here on Sunday.
Playing under cloudy weather, Terengganu proved their worth by obtaining 24 points from four tries and two conversions.
The tries came from Muhammad Haikal Ibrahim in the first minute, Muhammad Harith Iqral Muhammad Anhar (fifth and seventh minutes) and Muhammad Syafiy Md Said (seventh minute), while the two conversions were completed by Mohd Fairuz Abdul Rahman. Kelantan’s five points were scored by Muhammad Amir Ibrahim with a try.
Terengganu coach Nik Mohd Shahiddan Mohd Zainal said the victory was a result of the hard work put in by the players, as well as the strategies planned for the tournament.
“Overall I am very pleased with the performances of the players as they gave it 100 per cent,” he told reporters here day.
In the Women’s Open category, Johor beat hosts Perak 17-5, while in the Men’s Qualifiers category, which sees the victor join the eight elite teams next season, Sabah beat Perlis, 14-0.
In the Men’s Under 20 (U-20) final, Kelantan beat Negeri Sembilan 28-7, while the Women’s U-20 category saw Labuan beat Sabah 15-10 to win it.
The prizes were awarded by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim. – Bernama
