LAWAS: The younger generation is urged to equip themselves with the relevant knowledge and skills to enable them to participate in the new digital economy and e-commerce.

The call was made by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan who is also Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development and Second Minister of Urban Development and Natural Resources at Lawas District-level Gawai closing ceremony held at Seri Malaysia Hotel here on Tuesday night.

“That is why we build industrial estates here which can help in the development and progress of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to uplift the living standard of the people,” he said.

Awang Tengah was also happy to note that the local Iban community has improved a lot with many having doctorate degree.

Apart from that, he also urged the community to ensure that their children are not involved in drug abuse.

Hence, he wanted the community to work as a unit to assist the authorities involved to fight the drug menace, online gambling and other social ills.

He also disclosed that he will be meeting the Land and Survey Department to allocate land for a cemetery for the Iban community here, gazette longhouse areas and to allocate land lots to those eligible in the village expansion programme at Banting here.

He also hoped that leaders of the Iban community to play their roles to ensure that everyone continues to respect one other.

Among those present were Awang Tengah’s wife Dato Hajah Dayang Morliah binti Datuk Haji Awang Daud, Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Dato Henry Sum Agong, Batu Danau Assemblyman, Paulus Palu Gumbang and local community leaders.
