KUCHING: Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has suggested that the government install high-technology security systems such as the facial recognition system at immigration checkpoints at all airports and strategic locations.
“Whenever the camera detects the face of the person, it directly links to our big data. Then the data can link to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), international agencies like Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Scotland Yard and Interpol.
“From there, we can tell whether the person is a criminal or not and decide whether to allow him or her to enter or not,” he stressed.
“At the moment, we do not have such high-tech systems in place. So hopefully, our government will seriously look into this,” said Wan Junaidi, who once was former deputy minister of home affairs.
The security of the country, he stressed, must be tightened to prevent undesirable groups from entering it. The country’s Special Branch (SB), police force, military intelligence and other intelligence agencies must also be strengthened.
“They must be on the alert and vigilant always to make sure elements like Daesh and other groups that have been classified under the United Nations (UN) as terrorist do not enter the country,” he said when commenting on the 12 individuals caught for suspected involvement in Daesh.
Wan Junaidi pointed out that of great concern now were the porous borders across the country with no physical checkpoints, making unwanted intrusion highly possible.
“Sabah has over 1,000 kms of water and land border. Sarawak has 1,100kms of border with Indonesia while in the northern part of Malaysia, we have the border with Thailand. All these are porous borders.
“We don’t have checkpoints there. People can just come in. The security is not that tight and intrusion is happening. Everybody knows about it, including the police and military,” he said.
“That is why drugs, guns or even unwanted groups can easily get into the country.
“Our worry is all these illegal immigrants who come into our country are security risks.”
Wan Junaidi said Deash was not Islamic.
“Islam does not propagate violence and will not allow violence. Islam is a peaceful religion,” he stressed.
