MIRI: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged Miri City Council (MCC) to make Miri a smart city.

“I understand that the Mayor and his officers   recently went to Singapore, Subang Jaya, Tokyo and Taipei to learn about smart city and urban waste management, I hope all of you who have participated in the study tours overseas will now sit down to plan about  developing Miri into smart city that is safe, liveable, sustainable and convivial,” he said.

Abang Johari’s text of speech was read out by Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin at the 14th Miri City Day celebration dinner held on Friday night at leading hotel here.

“MCC should start work closely will all the stakeholders in Miri to initiate more activities on digital economy,” added the chief minister.

Abang Johari also urged the council to improve its city traffic system.

He added one of the focus areas of the ministry would be the urban traffic management, such as the introduction of smart public transport and intelligent traffic systems.

This, he pointed out, was in line with the state government’s emphasis on digital development.

“Currently, the state government has embarked on the Sarawak Digital Economy strategy, it is our policy to leapfrog the state into digital economy,” he explained.

On the construction of the city’s hall which was in progress, Abang Johari said he was happy the project was running smoothly.

The RM70 million project is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.

Once completed, the city hall will mark another important milestone in the development of Miri city.

Also present during the anniversary dinner were Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting, Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Telang Usan Assemblyman Dennis Ngau, former Miri MP Tan Sri Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui and Miri Mayor Adam Yii.
