KUCHING: Two months ago, Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that state government will increase the number of towers to 5,000 from the existing of 1,200.
In addition, Johari when met by reporters after attending an open house of Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on Tuesday said, identification works of locations of the additional towers were now completed.
Internet speed in the state is obviously seven times slower than South Korea where, the average internet speed in Sarawak is four megabits (Mbps) per household compared to 29 for South Korea.
Therefore, the effort to provide fast internet services is paramount in parallel with the state’s digital economy policy.
New Sarawak Tribune reporter has the opportunity to ask the public on the state government’s efforts in providing fast internet service.
Nurul Afifah Shoib, a 26-year-old teacher, said that fast internet is indispensable especially in rural areas.
“Teachers in schools especially in rural areas are in need of high-speed internet for teaching and work purposes (online stuffing).
“The very slow internet level at this time is very complicating the condition of teachers to do jobs that need to do online,” she said, hoping that the state government will speed up the work of upgrading the internet’s speed so that students in rural areas can be exposed to technology.

Meanwhile, Ummi Nurnatasha Shoib, 23, the implementation of high speed internet is very good especially for her as a student.
“High speed internet is important especially in finding information to make assignments.
“In addition to high-speed internet, good roads, adequate street lighting facilities are also very important,” she explained, hoping that the related parties would also improve the quality of basic facilities in line with technology development.
