MIRI: Former deputy chief minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan lauded Sime Darby for its philanthropic initiatives in the state, especially in education.
“Sime Darby has provided fundings for scholarships for the lower income group, helped the less fortunate, promoted the development of sports and culture and ensured the protection of the environment for future generations,” he said.
Chan said this during Sime Darby’s 90th anniversary dinner held on Thursday. He added, for the past 90 years since its inception, Sime Darby has contributed a lot to the building of the nation.
Also present were Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin; Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting; Senator Alan Ling; Miri mayor Adam Yii; Caterpillar Asia Pacific Distribution vice president Raymond Chan; Sime Darby Industrial managing director CK Teoh; and Rotary Club of Kuching Central (RCKC) president Leonard Sia. At the event, two companies — Ta Ann Group and Samling Group of Companies — in support for Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society have donated a total of RM40,000 (RM30,000 from Ta An and RM10,000 from Samling) while an anonymous individual has chipped in an additional RM10,000.
In conjunction with its 90th anniversary, Sime Darby also gave back to help rural schools in dire need of basic facilities by donating a generator set worth RM50,000 to SK Sungai Laong, Bakong.
