TELANG USAN: Reading habit needs to be inculcated among rural children as early as possible, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

He stated, “It is undeniable, due to various reasons, rural children and even the adults do not take reading seriously as compared to the urban communities.

“Therefore, it is an opportune time for Miri State Library to introduce this Reading Workshop seeds to mothers who are expecting and with young children as a way to motivate our rural community on the importance of reading.”

Dennis made this remark at the launching of a Handing Over of Reading Kits ceremony and the Reading Workshop seeds for the rural community at Long Lama Community Hall yesterday.

He mentioned that reading should be a part of life for students and adults to improve their general knowledge.

“It is not easy to organise an event in a rural area. This is part of a plan of the state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to transform rural Sarawak, including Telang Usan, into a progressive community.

“Therefore, every person in Telang Usan must show their appreciation for the efforts made by the state government,” he said.

Dennis stressed that the world is changing faster without us realising it.

“Hence, we must change our mindset and adapt to modern trends including pushing towards the highest educational attainment. The state government is all out to promote and inculcate reading habits among rural and urban folk in the state.

“Part of the efforts to promote reading habits could be seen today in the event,” he said.

As reading is not really a habit of the rural folk, this event was deemed important to promote the habit among them.

“I hope that the efforts by the Miri State Library will be appreciated by practising reading habits from tomorrow onwards,” he said.

More than 50 parents with their children participated in the programme.

Also present at the event were Miri State Library president Salina Haji Zawawi and Temenggong Elizabeth Deng.
