KUALA LUMPUR: At least five countries are currently cooperating with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to track down unidentified assets and properties related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) with an estimated value of RM18.9 billion.
MACC Chief Commission Latheefa Koya said her team was working together with these countries through the recently formalised National Financial Crime Centre (NFCC) to investigate and locate the whereabouts of the assets.
“… this is not a one-off kind of transaction, it is a multiple transactions,” she told reporters on the sidelines of the International Conference on Financial Crimes and Terrorism Financing 2019 here yesterday.
Elaborating further, Latheefa said the MACC was working closely with the countries involved to locate the assets.
However, she said the endeavour would take some time to bear fruit as the commission had to identify the assets first.
It was reported that the United States Department of Justice issued a statement that according to the civil forfeiture complaints, from 2009 through 2015, more than US$4.5 billion in funds belonging to 1MDB were allegedly misappropriated by high-level officials of 1MDB and their associates, including Low Taek Jho who also known as Jho Low, through a criminal conspiracy involving international money laundering and bribery. – Bernama
