THE Ministry of Local Government and Housing and NREB have completed a study on a long-term plan to resolve waste collection and management issues. Local Government Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said this in reply to a question from Gerald Rentap Jabu (GPS-Layar) in the State Legislative Assembly yesterday. Penguang said the final reports of the Integrated Solid Waste Management study have been submitted to his ministry on July 26.
Among the recommendations of the study are a proposal to have appropriate solid waste management plans for all local authorities in Sarawak with emphasis on establishing a transfer station, an optimal and cost-effective integrated solid waste treatment facility, in-situ portable incinerators and sanitary landfills at strategic locations.
To a question raised by Awla Dris (GPS-Simunjan) on the amount of waste collected, Penguang said the Simunjan District Council collected about 15 tonnes of waste daily in Simunjan.
He added that RM992,310 has been spent on waste management last year, while a sum of RM825,510 was used for rubbish collection and RM166,800 for managing the waste management site.
“From January to August 31 this year, about 15.16 tonnes were collected daily at a total collection waste cost of RM537,141 and RM94,880 for managing the waste management site,” he pointed out.
