A total of 66 projects from 2,641 Rural Transformation Projects are labelled as “sick projects” in Sarawak this year.
Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali revealed that these projects suffered because of contractors who were facing financial difficulties.
“In total, there are 139 or two percent sick projects from 10,001 that were approved from 2015 to September 2019,” she revealed yesterday.
She was responding to a question from Mohamad Chee Kadir (GPS-Kabong).
Hasidah named one of the “sick projects” in the Kabong state constituency as the project to upgrade the hawker centre at the Nyabor-Kabong junction.
“The work is 98 percent completed. The project was scheduled to be completed by February 14 this year.
“However, it is not ready yet as the contractors are still waiting for the electricity to be connected by Sesco (Sarawak Energy),” she explained.
She revealed that Saratok District Council had written to Sesco Sri Aman on October 25 to enquire about the cost of connecting the electricity.
Hasidah stressed that the Sarawak government would ensure that RTP projects were completed on time within the scope and cost that were set.
“By that, we will continue to monitor the projects and visit the implementing agencies and meet them for updates,” she said.
