DEMOCRATIC Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has given the thumbs-up to a suggestion to build five international schools in Sarawak.
Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Kota Sentosa) said although DAP first mooted the idea back in 2015, he was glad that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had picked up the idea.
“You can read in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Hansard, on December 8, 2015, I proposed that the state
government set up a private English medium school,” he said yesterday.
“I proposed that the state government allocate 10 percent of the budget allocation to setting up private English medium schools which shall need licences from the federal ministry which would be easily given due to the close relationship between Sarawak and the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government.
“This private school will teach in English. The school as I
suggested would not collect any fees as the students would be Sarawakians.”
Chong said although he is glad that five years later the idea has finally come to fruition, he would like to know additional details on the international schools.
“No allocation was given in the State 2020 Budget. There is also no time frame given.
“I urge the chief minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) to give the figures in his winding-up speech,” he added.
