KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department seized contraband cigarettes and liquors worth RM1.4 million including taxes during an operation at a premises at Serian Durian Piazza, Serian Division.
Customs enforcement officers from Miri, Bintulu and Sarikei together with the Intelligence Branch and Internal Investigation Unit conducted the raid on Tuesday at 12.15pm.
The 803,660 sticks of cigarettes and 18,406.41 litres of alcohol did not bear any stamp to prove they had undergone Customs checks.
Customs Sarawak director Herman Shah Abdullah said the enforcement officers had been monitoring the premises for a few days following public complaints.
The business owner had turned a shop lot next to the premises into a store to keep stashes of the cigarettes and liquors.
The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
Herman urged the public to cooperate with the Customs Department by providing information about any smuggling activities happening in any areas.
They can call the Customs Toll free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or go to the nearest Customs Office.
