KUCHING: The victory of Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Cameron Highland by-election is considered a “booster” for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to continue its struggles for Sarawak.
BN candidate Ramli Mohd Nor secured 12,038 votes to defeat PH candidate M Manogaran who got 8,800 votes.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Women’s chief, Datuk Sri Fatimah Abdullah, said GPS is “boosted” to work hard to touch the hearts of the people and engage their minds.
She stressed that GPS is committed to fighting for Sarawak rights and further develop the state.
“BN’s victory in Cameron Highland goes to show that the party is sincere in helping the people of the constituency,” she told reporters after attending a Chinese New Year charity programme at Kuching Bodhi Path Society here yesterday.
“Congratulations to the candidate and voters of BN. The truth has spoken for itself,” she said.
She said that the people already noticed the weaknesses in Pakatan Harapan (PH) as the promises in their election manifesto are different from what they are doing today.
She believed that was a contributing factor that caused the people to reject the PH in Cameron Highlands.
“This is a booster for us to sincerely work hard for the people. With God’s blessing, our efforts will be felt by the people,” she said.
Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, said now is the time for GPS to not only work hard but to convince the people that it is serious in helping them.
“We have never faced this before where the opposition has formed the federal government. We can learn from it,” she said.
Therefore, GPS will continue to find alternative sources of revenue to fund projects cancelled by the federal government but which are needed for Sarawak’s progress.
“We are on our own now, so we have to stand strong to continue serving the people.”
