MALUDAM: The red shrimp season (payak) is back again, with fishermen bringing ashore these crustaceans in bulk once a year as a source of extra income — and this time, it also comes when the Muslims will be celebrating Hari Raya.

This also happened to five fishermen who fortunately caught 7,400kg of red shrimps in waters around Kabong near here on Saturday.

One of the fishermen Muliady Shamsudin, when contacted by our reporter said the bountiful catches which had flooded their 10-foot boat was an unexpected fortune given to them.

“We managed to bring home about 185 baskets of catches where we sold them at RM35 per basket — all of which were quickly snapped up by fellow villagers and wholesalers.

“The sales (of these catches) have reached nearly RM6,000.

“Alhamdulillah, this is an unexpected gift during Ramadan and moreover, Hari Raya is just around the corner,” said the 46-year-old.
