KAPIT: Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Nicholas Kudi Jantai has called on the Department of Unity and National Integration to set up many more Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT) at longhouses in the rural areas.
He pointed out that KRT is a non-governmental organisation under the supervision of Department Unity and National Integration that played an important role to play in the local communities to unite the people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds to come together to foster unity and the spirit of volunteerism.
“KRT has multiple roles and one of the responsibility is the neighbourhood watch to deter social ill activities and at the same time to serve as the ear and eye of the government to report of any undesirable people in the village that may posed security threat” said Kudi while officiating at the ‘Majlis Penyerahan Watikah Pelantikan Sijil KRT Nanga Sekukut’ held at Rumah Empawi, Nanga Sekukut, Sungai Ulu Yong recently.
He added that KRT committee members are the pillars of the committee because they helped to plan and carry up those activities to involve the local communities. “Therefore, it is just right that you know the ‘dos and don’ts’ because there is the standardized rule and regulations to follow”, said Kudi.
Meanwhile he also advised the KRT committee to be proactive to organise various activities within the neighbourhood.
The Unity Officer of the Department of Unity and National Integrity,Jendi Mangku who spoke earlier at the function congratulated the committee members who received their Letter of Appointment. She explained that the Letter of Appointment is the symbol of authority or ‘Green Light’ for them to plan for activities within the areas under their jurisdiction.
She pointed out that although KRT is categorised as NGO, they need not to submit the yearly report to the ROS (registrar of Societies) because they are directly under the ministry.
Present together at the function were the chairmen of the various KRT Units in Kapit district, head of the various government agencies, councillor Jimmy Jadam, village chieftains from the nearby longhouses and some 250 invited guests and longhouse folks.
