MIRI: The significant increase of eligible voters aged 18 in this coming 15th general election provides a new platform for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) to attract more young voters, said Sibuti Member of Parliament (MP) Lukanisman Awang Sauni on Saturday.
“The young voters’ segment contributes to about 400,000 votes statewide, making this group a crucial pointer for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) in this coming election,” he added when met by local reporters after attended at the launching of PBB Bekenu sub branches’ annual general meeting (AGM) in Miri.
“Presently, we have a total 57,000 registered voters in Sibuti and this figure includes first time voters in the constituency.”
Thus, he said, it was important for the party to engage more young voters in political participations.
Lukanisman added that a working committee had been mooted to help assist in the establishment of its Youth Wing.
“We hope by June this year, the Youth Wing is ready and will be officially launched during the PBB’s convention by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said.
More than 50 representatives from a total 35 PBB Bekenu sub branches were present at the launching of the AGM.
The event was launched by Assistant Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Rosey Yunus.
In July 2019, the Malaysia Parliament approved a Bill lowering the voting age for general elections from 21 to 18 years old.
