KUCHING: DAL HCM Sdn Bhd and DAL Keluarga Realty Sdn Bhd presented two cheques for RM20,000 and RM10,000 respectively to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday.

The contributions were handed over by DAL HCM Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Dzulkarnaen Ahmad to Unimas Endowment and Waqf Division head Dayang Nor Hajijah Awang Daud.

According to Dzulkarnaen, the contributions were part of the companies’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme which aimed to help the university’s needy students.

“I was also informed that it will also be used as incentives for students who excel.

“This is our continuous effort to support local universities and local students in the state, and hopefully the students will give back to the country upon graduation,” he said.

On Unimas’ part, Dayang stated that the university opened enrolment not only via the UPUOnline — Central University Admission Unit online portal managed by the Education Ministry — but also to those who are less fortunate.

“We have a channel to facilitate matters pertaining to students coming from the B40 group on their enrolment and welfare.

“It is very common for us to see less fortunate students who are eligible to enrol in the university, reject our offer because of financial problems.

“Therefore, we have various partners from the private sector who have been helping us, and the university acts as the middle man to facilitate the transactions,” she said.

She further said that the contributions would be used to help students with their registration fees, recurring and non-recurring fees for Semester 1 in Year 1, while waiting for the students to apply for financial assistance from other parties such as the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

“In the event that we have surplus in funding, we will continue to provide the money as ‘pocket money’ to the students which is normally RM500 per month throughout each student’s three years of education.

“Thus, we hope that more parties will come forward to join in funding the less fortunate students. The more we get, the more students will benefit,” she continued.

DAL HCM Sdn Bhd is a company involved in general construction, civil works and road maintenance.

In February 2018, the company entered into a concession agreement with the federal government for the maintenance of 751km of federal roads from Kuching to Lawas in Sarawak. This concession will run until 2028.
