SIBU: A male teacher lost RM9,250 after being scammed by an individual who posed as his friend.
District police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit who confirmed the case, said a police report on the incident was received on Wednesday.
The complainant, 46, received a WhatsApp text from an unknown number that used a profile picture of a person known to him.
“The suspect sought the help of the complainant to make a transaction amounting to RM6,250 into an account in the name of a person for the purpose of helping a relative who was in trouble.
“In addition to that, the complainant was also asked to make another transaction into another bank account for the same purpose,” said the police chief.
Without checking whether it was really for the person he knew or not, the complainant did as told and both transactions were made online on Wednesday.
The complainant only realised that he was scammed after his friend (whom the suspect posed as) contacted the complainant and informed that the complainant’s picture had also been used for the same purpose for fraudulent purposes, Stanley explained.
He pointed out the suspect’s modus operandi was deceiving the complainant into making a payment by disguising as a person known to him.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
