Maxweil Bangi Mauder, also known as Jupey Mauder, 24, from Sri Aman, began his career as a beautician in 2017 after assisting his friend Fazmmer Payjoe with makeup services.

Maxweil also offers his clients photography services.

A year later, the young man started his small-scale business, which has grown in popularity ever since.

“In 2018, I began challenging myself by participating in various cosmetics and hairstyle courses. In the same year, I started working as a makeup artist,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

He usually provides makeup services on weekends. On the other hand, from Monday to Friday, it is based upon customers’ requests as he is also attending classes in an institute.

“I usually offer makeup services in the evening. Because I don’t have any assistants, I will seek help from Meera, my beautician lecturer from Giatmara, if there is a big job or a large number of customers,” he said.

So far, his business is only run from his home in Sri Jaya, Sri Aman.

“I’ve faced many challenges throughout my work, particularly the increased expense of cosmetic products. Meanwhile, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on small traders for the past two years. There were no customers for makeup, hairdo, or manicures and pedicures. At the time, I was on the verge of giving up, but I persevered and began activities in the kitchen, such as baking cookies, chips, and popia to sell in order to supplement my income,” he said.

In terms of his service costs, the minimum he charges is depending on the customers’ budget because he is aware that not everyone can afford it. For manicures and pedicures, he would inform them about simple nail designs at reasonable pricing.

“I’m still learning, but I’d like to keep working in the beauty industry,” he said.

His biggest supporters are his family, lecturers, friends, and regular customers.

“My aim is to advance in the beauty industry. And I want my younger siblings to carry on what I’m doing,” he said.

His piece of advice for the small businesses out there is to persevere through all difficulties and don’t give up easily.
