KUCHING: The streets of Padungan, which is close to a hundred years old, needs more ‘soul and life’ to it – and efforts to plant more trees along the streets will help to do so
Kuching City South Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that 40 trees will be planted along the streets of Padungan and 15 trees will be decorated with lights to liven up its streets.
“Planting trees is the most important thing we can do to contribute, it reduces noise pollution, filters air and removes harmful particles and promotes health.
“We would like to appeal, this symbolic gesture of today, it is a collective effort to ensure a healthy planet”, he said during the MBKS Tree Planting Activity at Jalan Padungan here today (Oct 22).
He said MBKS is constantly reconstructing the gardens and parks in areas under its jurisdiction and tree planting is also part of the efforts to help the well being of nature.
He also pointed out that some old lights along the streets of Padungan will be fixed and the remaining budget will be used to decorate the roads along Jalan Padungan.
The aim of the Tree Planting Activity is to raise awareness to the society of the importance of planting and saving trees, which express concerns to the environment and diminish the unfavourable effects of climate change.
Present at the Tree Planting Activity were MBKS deputy mayor Hilmy Othman, MBKS city secretary Zainab Marzali, councillors, senior officers and others.
