DALAT: The completion of the concrete Sungai Tanam Bridge a few days ago has made it easier for motorists to cross the river at Kampung Tanam here.
In the past, the commuters depended on a narrow wooden bridge built alongside the village road.
Located in the heart of this Dalat’s second largest village, the first bridge consisted of just several pieces of tree trunks.
The bridge was replaced by a plankwalk made of local iron wood, Belian, in the late 1970s when bicycles and motorcycles were the only forms of land transport then.
About two decades later when the village road was upgraded, the bridge was reinforced to enable cars and other small vehicles to cross the river. However, the bridge could only accommodate one car at a time.
The latest upgrading of the wooden bridge was done in 2013.
With the completion of the concrete bridge a few days ago, Sungai Tanam now has two concrete bridges, with the first one located behind the village or along the main Oya-Dalat Road connecting Mukah and other districts in the Division.
