KUCHING: See the potential and abilities of disabled people instead of their disabilities, said the Welfare, Community Welfare, Women, Family and Child Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
“My experience working with these people is that they do not want pity from us. They want dignity,” she said.
“So let us provide better infrastructure, intervention, rehabilitation, education, sports training, and so on for them.”
“We want Sarawak to be a socially inclusive society with no one being sidelined.”
She then congratulated powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin for having won the Tokyo Paralympic.
“Before they went off to Tokyo, my ministry organised a Zoom meeting on Aug 4 for them to speak with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg. They were also given some money to spend in Tokyo.
“After that meeting, they felt more motivated to win medals for Sarawak and Malaysia,” adding that the chief minister will be giving incentives to Sarawak-born medal winners.
