KUCHING: Embarking on a memorable evening, picture yourself dressed in your most comfortable attire after a delightful dinner. You hop into your car and embark on a scenic drive to the Sarawak State Stadium.

Little do you know that you are about to step into a world filled with laughter, cries, screams, and pure adrenaline — the Great British Circus.

As you step out of your car, the breathtaking Kuching sunset greets you, casting a golden glow over a circus-like tent. Your attention is drawn to a big red tent adorned with flashing lights and the prominent words “Great British Circus”.

Approaching the entrance, the sounds of chatter, laughter, and children’s screams fill the air. Families, couples, teenagers, and elders eagerly queue up, tickets in hand, ready for an evening of wonder.

The audience

With each step forward, anticipation surges through your veins as you wonder what surprises await you.

Finally, it’s your turn, and a man dressed in a dazzling gold and black suit warmly welcomes you with a knowing and mischievous smile, swiftly stamping your ticket.

As you enter, a red hallway illuminated by glowing bulbs stretches before you, leading you towards the captivating aroma of popcorn, butter, cotton candy, and fizzy drinks—a true feast for the senses.

Passing by the concession stands, another red hallway beckons, filled with lively, jazzy circus music that grows louder with each step.

Gradually, the hall reveals itself—the circus hall.

In the centre, a stage is surrounded by seats arranged in a U-shape, ensuring a perfect view for everyone, whether in the rear, hot, or VIP seats.

Vibrant RGB lights illuminate the dark hall, and the sight of suspended poles and equipment promises an exhilarating show.

A typical circus scene unfolds: black curtains drape the backstage, red, pleated curtains hang above, and a fence separates the performers from the audience.

While waiting for the show to commence, the hall buzzes with conversations – fathers reminiscing about circuses in Kuching from decades ago, now sharing the experience with their children, kids eagerly asking when the show will start, and mothers exchanging stories about their playful children.

Regardless of age, race, or religion, the circus brings people from diverse backgrounds together, united in the shared experience of joy and wonder.

Just moments before the show begins, the hall plunges into darkness.

A spirited Scottish voice breaks through the air—the ring mistress.

Emerging from behind the curtains in a striking outfit adorned with white, blue, and red stripes, she ignites the audience’s excitement.

As the clock strikes 5:30 pm, the hall goes dark, and the first act commences.

Screams and cheers erupt as jaws drop and exclamations of “wow” fill the air, leaving everyone eager to discover what the next second holds.

The suspense is electrifying with each act surpassing the previous in thrill and heart-stopping moments.

Yet, the fun doesn’t end with the acts alone. The performers’ chemistry with the audience elevates the experience, creating unforgettable moments at every turn.

Act after act, scream after scream, the night concludes after a two-hour adrenaline rush.

The crowd roars with excitement as the circus reaches its grand finale.

Exhausted parents and still energetic children rush out of the hall, their hearts filled with joy and satisfaction.

“What a perfect night!” they exclaim.

As the children’s adrenaline subsides, everyone, young and old, peacefully drifts off to sleep, perhaps dreaming of the circus.

If you yearn for a perfect night with your loved ones, an experience that surpasses the limits of words, make your way to the Great British Circus, taking place from now until July 14.
