SIBU: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) has expressed its readiness to work with Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad in various areas.
According to UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed yesterday (Sept 6) signifies the university’s openness to collaboration.
“This is a partnership that could involve banking or educational cooperation, given our university’s expertise in certain fields,” he told a press conference after the MoU signing ceremony between UTS and Bank Islam at UTS Senate Room.
Khairuddin also thanked Bank Islam for its assistance through the Zakat Wakalah programme.
“We have used the zakat to support student welfare, particularly those from rural areas,” he added.
Meanwhile, Director of Retail Banking Distribution at Bank Islam, Zamree Mohamed, revealed that a total of RM82,400 in Zakat Wakalah was distributed across Sarawak in 2023, benefiting four higher learning institutions, including UTS.
Zamree hoped that the partnership would yield benefits for both parties through initiatives such as in-service training, knowledge-sharing programmes, and more.
At the ceremony, Bank Islam presented a Zakat Wakalah of RM10,000 to UTS.
