KUCHING: The first match of the Youth Cup between Kuching City FC and Sarawak United ended 1-1 on Wednesday.
Sarawak United head coach Firdaus said the game was a good opportunity for the players to get into their stride.
“Winning or losing today was not much of a concern but more to the performance from the players.”
He singled out Kuching City FC midfielder Herdyanus Wen and his own team’s skipper and defender Harith Danielle Abdullah as the players who did well in the encounter.
“Their ability to control and counter was excellent. (On his own team) More is still needed to get the team in the flow and play better,” Firdaus added.
Sarawak United opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Thomson Thomas.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Herdyanus scored the equaliser. As the match wore on, both sets of players showed signs of fatigue.
Harith had two opportunities to settle the game but was thwarted by Kuching City FC keeper Muhammad Faridzan.
Seconds before the final whistle, Kuching City FC’s Ariff Amirul almost won it for his team but for the heroics of Sarawak United’s Muhammad Irwin.
