KUCHING: Sarawak is not taking away Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) business, but are partners in the oil and gas (O&G) industry through Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari, in refuting allegations that Sarawak has taken away Petronas’ business rights, emphasised that the Sarawak government has authority over O&G resources under the Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958.

“As you know, there have been some reports, especially from Peninsular Malaysia, accusing Sarawak of taking Petronas’ business rights. We are not, instead, I assure you that the company and Petros are partners in the oil and gas industry.

“We are exploring this industry based on the rights enshrined in our laws. In fact, we operate within legal parameters, and Petronas understands this, as does Sarawak.

“But there are outsiders trying to stir things up to prevent Petronas from collaborating with Petros.”

Abang Johari said this in his speech at the launch of the Sarawak Electrolyser Assembly – Distribution Facility (SEA-DF) at Demak Laut Indutrial Park here today (June 6).

He also said that there are parties in Peninsular Malaysia who are envious of Sarawak’s success in increasing revenue through the oil and gas sector.

“And today, the launch of the first electrolyser assembly and distribution facility in the country and Southeast Asia is also strong evidence of the close cooperation between Sarawak, through SEDC Energy, and Petronas.

“It is better for us to continue working closely together as it brings more benefits, particularly in producing skilled experts.

“I understand that this facility is training eight Sarawakian youths to become engineers in the green energy sector.

“They can later be sent to international companies to enhance their skills and knowledge in hydrogen and the new economy,” he said.
