SYDNEY: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed that Malaysia’s role as Asean chair in 2025 should prioritise strategic steps toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In a news report by TVS, the Premier expressed optimism that the Asean chairmanship will enhance green energy cooperation between the Asean bloc and regional countries.
” Asean as a bloc will engage with neighboring countries, including Australia, Korea, and Japan, with a shared goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he said during a press conference following his keynote address at the 2024 Australia- Asean Business Forum on Thursday (Aug 29).
Abang Johari noted the need to find effective solutions for implementing policies that support green goals, particularly in the agriculture and food security sectors.
“We need to explore ways to implement these policies, including in food production, where increasing green food production and other sustainable products is essential,” he added.
He also highlighted the importance of green energy in ensuring that heavy industries, such as steel production, can significantly reduce their carbon footprint.
“The energy used must be green energy, which will help neutralise the carbon footprint,” he stressed.
He further noted that close cooperation between Asean and countries like Australia is crucial to achieving a more inclusive and environmentally responsible green economy vision.
