SYDNEY: Lush forest ecosystems and vast natural resources are assets to Sarawak’s green economy which should not be exploited but rather, be protected and conserved, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Sarawak’s land which is 60 per cent covered by forest serve not only as vital carbon sinks, but also play a key role in preserving the livelihoods and cultural heritage of indigenous communities.

“Our commitment to preserve these ecosystems is reflected in our work on legislation related to carbon storage and forest carbon activities. Our recent legal amendments have paved the way for carbon trading, carbon storage and the sustainable management of our forests.

“These efforts are essential in ensuring that our natural assets are utilised responsibly,” said the Premier.

He made these remarks during his keynote address at the Australia-Asean Business Forum 2024 here on Thursday (Aug 29).

Abang Johari also highlighted Sarawak’s significant strides in Southeast Asia when it comes to Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technology.

“We were also the first in Malaysia to pass laws that support CCUS and other carbon-related activities. This demonstrates our strong commitment to achieving our net zero emissions goals and sets a benchmark for others to follow,” he said.

With Sarawak’s aim to have solar energy make up 12 per cent of its total capacity mix by 2030, Abang Johari said this will not only help reduce the state’s carbon footprint but also contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sector.

He also said Sarawak’s hydropower provides clean and reliable energy which supports local industries as well as enable the state to export surplus power.

“Since 2010, we have reduced our grid emissions by 73 per cent. This showcases our dedication to achieving net zero and advancing green economy,” he added.
