Chief Minister relinquishes Saberkas presidency to deputy
MIRI: Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is stepping down as the Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) president after 11 years at the helm, paving the way for younger leaders to carry the torch.
The chief minister made the announcement when declaring open Saberkas’ 16th triennial general meeting (TGM) here today.
“I leave it to the delegates to decide on my successor,” he said during a press conference held after the opening ceremony of the TGM.
Although he did not name his successor, Abang Johari stressed that Saberkas’ next president must be capable to lead the biggest organisation in Sarawak.
“…and I see that Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, my deputy, is the most fit to succeed me for the post,” he said.
Abang Johari described Saberkas as a mature organisation that had been a platform in nurturing leaderships skills among youths in Sarawak.
Abang Johari was appointed as Saberkas president at its 13th TGM in 2009, taking over from Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who had helmed the organisation for 28 years.
A total 177 delegates from 59 Saberkas’ branches attended the 16th TGM today.
