KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari was thrilled to meet Sophia, the social humanoid robot, during the Sarawak Beyond Paradigm Summit 2019 at Pullman Hotel yesterday.
The robot, developed by Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics, was displayed at the two-day summit organised by Serba Dinamik Sdn Bhd.
The chief minister spoke to Sophia for nearly 15 minutes.
“How do you feel (about) coming to Sarawak?,” Abang Johari asked Sophia.
Sophia replied, “It has been a real adventure coming here. I love all the heritage, cultures and traditions on display here in Sarawak.”
When Abang Johari asked her what made her different from other robots, she replied, “Most of the robots do not get to hang out with the Chief Minister of Sarawak.”
He also asked Sophia how Sarawak could maintain its heritage and traditions as it advanced technologically.
“It is important to educate children from young on the traditions and value, and technology is there to protect the heritage,” she replied.
She said with AI, humans would not be replaced because humans are better than robots in EQ, critical thinking, and creativity.
The chief minister pointed out it was important to keep Sarawak’s heritage alive as it moved into the digital world because at the end on the day, it is the state’s identity.
Sophia responded by commenting, “It is very beautiful and inspiring.”
“I enjoy being on stage with you. Thank you for sharing so much of your wisdom with me. Let’s keep in touch.”
