KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is set to travel to Poland next week to share his insights on conservation-related issues.
He said such an invitation reflects the recognition gained by Sarawak through its effort in tackling climate change.
“You see, climate change is a very serious issue and last year the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) reported that the global average temperature is at near surface, which is 1.45 Celcius.
“Under the Paris Agreement, global temperature cannot exceed 1.5 celsius. And now we are within that average temperature.
“Once it has already reached 1.5 celsius, it will become a threat towards human survival and even marine life,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters during his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today (Apr 10).
Abang Johari also mentioned that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will introduce a federal Carbon Trading Law based on Sarawak’s existing trading law, implemented last year.
“So for Malaysia to move forward, they must have these legal parameters for us to get involved in the international trade with carbon and the desire to mitigate the emission of carbon.
“That being said, they have asked their people in the federal government to study our law and incorporate our law into the federal law.
“That means the carbon trading regime must be credible, recognised by the international community, and our law is based on what has been recommended by the World Bank,” said Abang Johari.
