KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah agrees with the National Recovery Council’s (NRC) proposal to open the country’s borders in stages as soon as possible.
The Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister hoped that the government would consider this matter.
“We have gone through two years of lockdown and our life is slowly going back to normal.
“Thus, I fully agree that there must be a definite timeline for the reopening of our borders,” he said on Friday (Feb 4).
On Feb 1, NRC chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the council had recommended that the government open the country’s borders in stages, beginning with last month, however, the borders had yet to be opened.
Asked whether or not Sarawak was ready to welcome international visitors, Abdul Karim said that if the state was ready, then it could open the borders.
“If people keep on thinking and having the fear that Covid-19 will haunt us … 10 years down the road, Covid-19 will still be around.
“So, it is a question of whether we want to do it or not.”
