KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts is urging Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB) to expedite efforts in upgrading facilities at Kuching International Airport (KIA).
Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressed his disappointment with the current state of KIA, stating that the airport falls short of desired standards, particularly in terms of cleanliness and facilities.
“The KIA is an important international gateway, one of the entry points into Malaysia. We receive visitors from various international destinations who come to Kuching.
“I have to admit that it’s not really up to the mark. Just like our house. Our house can be small, our house can be big. Just like our homes, whether large or small, cleanliness and facilities should always meet a certain standard.”
He made these remarks after the IMEX Frankfurt press conference at the Baitul Makmur II building here on Wednesday (April 17).
Additionally, Abdul Karim said a growing tourism sector requires equivalent facilities, including quality restrooms and accommodations.
“The quality of airport facilities must be taken seriously, especially concerning restrooms, check-in counters, and baggage claim processes. This is crucial to ensure passenger comfort and satisfaction.
“I understand that the airport was built years ago to accommodate a certain number of passengers.
“However, with an increasing number of visitors, it is crucial to consider airport expansion and improvements to handle more travellers.”
Furthermore, Abdul Karim also stressed the importance of ensuring that existing facilities at KIA are well-maintained.
“For instance, the lack of restrooms in the international departure area at KIA is a serious issue.
“Do not easily excuse this as ‘not planned that way.’ When flights are delayed for one or two hours, where do we go for restroom breaks? We have to leave the area to find restrooms. This is impractical.
“Additionally, provide kiosks for passengers to get refreshments. For domestic flights, there are plenty of open spaces at the airport.
“However, for international passengers, they are confined to cramped spaces. This is not a pleasant experience for them. This is a matter that authorities must seriously address.”
