KUCHING: A deputy minister has sought the help of media practitioners in Sarawak to expose irresponsible groups or individuals who carry out open burning.
Datuk Abdullah Saidol said they should give wider coverage on the issue of open burning to “ensure the haze situation in Sarawak can be avoided at all cost”.
“We need more news coverage on this situation so that related parties can take specific action, especially now that there might be a preparation for open burning for farming purposes,” the Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Office (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communication Unit-UKAS) said.
On the present hot weather, he advised the public to limit outdoor activities for the sake of their health.
Abdullah was giving a brief speech during the UKAS fast-breaking programme at Riverside Majestic Hotel here last night.
On another note, he said media personnel should be observant on issues related to politics in Sarawak, and ensure that the political situation remains calm, so that “the state government can continue to focus on structuring the development agenda, alongside projects that involve the well-being of its people.”
The fast-breaking programme was attended by over 100 guests and media practitioners.
Also present were director of UKAS Samuel Simon, UKAS special administration officer Datuk Takun Sunggah, director of Sarawak Transformation and Innovation Unit Superi Awang Said, deputy president of Federal Sarawak Journalist Association (FSJA) Jacqueline David and deputy chairman of Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) Zulazhar Sheblee.
