KUCHING: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, widely known as MASDAR is eyeing to invest in developing green energy, particularly on solar energy in the state.

In revealing this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government has identified an area in Murum to generate 1 gigawatt of green energy through hydro for them to invest in.

“This is a big investment which means we have an added value in green energy production,” he said.

He said this when met by the media after attending the Gawai Dayak Open House at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Following this, he also disclosed that Sarawak will be opening up its office in Abu Dhabi that will be managed by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and PETROS.

“We are blessed with this green energy because as a hub we have sources of this green energy including hydrogen which addresses the global issue of climate change,” he said.

The Premier said the project also bolsters Sarawak’s food security with the elevated solar allowing the plantation beneath it to thrive.

“This has been done in Sharjah in the UAE where they develop solar whilst having a plantation below it. This is the combination between green energy and food production.

“As we have knowledge in green energy, we are actually on the right track on this matter,” he said.

Having said that, he said this initiative will likely commence beyond 2030.

“By that time, it wouldn’t be my time anymore but it will be done by the younger generation. In our government, what we are doing now is for the future and be benefitted by the young generation.

“That is why I came up with free education for them so that they can ensure what we worked for will materialise,” he said.
