Accused fined RM3,400 for keeping drugs

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to a fine of RM3,400 by the Magistrate’s Court  for possessing 8.82 grams of cannabis also known as marijuana in August today (7 Nov) .

The 20-year-old accused pleaded guilty to a charge which was read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

Syarifah sentenced the accused to five months in prison in default if he fails to pay the fine.

According to the charge, he was accused of possessing the prohibited substance in a motorcycle parking in an apartment building in Jalan Matang, at around 11.50am on Aug 29.

Hence, the accused is charged with possessing the drugs under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, whereby upon conviction, he can be fined not more than RM20,000 or a jailed a maximum of five years or both.

According to the facts of the case, police from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department arrested a man in the motorcycle parking lot under the apartment building because he was believed to be involved in drug activities.

As a result of the inspection of the accused’s sling bag, they found three transparent packets containing dried leaves believed to be cannabis.

The case was then sent to the Malaysian Chemicals Department and the report confirmed that it was cannabis or marijuana weighing 8.82 grams.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
