KUCHING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must take immediate action against those who are involved in corruption.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg said if there were early signs of civil servants not complying with the laws, action must be taken against them.
“It is only fair to those when actions are taken against those who are involved in corruption,” he said during the ‘Majlis Amanat Perdana Integrity 2019’ (MAPI) at Penview Convention Centre (PCC), here yesterday.
“We must act without fear or favour, and any punitive action is justice and fairness,” he added.
The chief minister said failure to tackle corruption at the early stage would result in difficulties later.
“This to ensure the ‘disease’ does not spread to their colleague and the whole organisation,” he added.
He noted that lately, there have been a few corporate leaders, politicians and civil servants being hauled up for questioning by MACC.
“The state government is following this issue closely and we believe investigations are carried out and handled professionally,” he said.
Abang Johari urged the public not to judge based on emotions or base their accusations on trial by the media, which sometimes might not be accurate.
“We must act fairly on those who have been accused so long as he has not been proven guilty,” he said.
He said but it was always better for the authorities to act fast, because prevention was better cure.
“An integrity culture must start from the government, then only will the whole population adopt it,” he said.
Hence the reason for the state government to organise integrity programmes to ensure the culture of integrity was practised by all, he added.
