MIRI: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) on Tuesday (Nov 30) warned that stern action would be taken against coffee shops that increase the prices of drinks.
“Stern action, including issuing notices to coffee shop owners asking for a valid reason within seven days from the issuance or they face a fine of RM100,000 or three years’ imprisonment or both if found guilty under the Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” said Miri KPDNHEP chief Joe Azmi Jamil.
He was contacted for his comments on public complaints about some coffee shops’ intention to increase the prices of drinks starting Wednesday (Dec 1).
“They are not supposed to increase the price, as the price of sugar is not increased (subsidised)…they have no valid reason to increase the price,” Joe Azmi pointed out.
It was alleged that the prices of drinks would be increased by about 20 sen.
In Miri, a cup of coffee is currently between RM1.80 and RM2.30 while soft drinks are around RM2.50.
