SIMANGGANG: The Works Ministry is currently in the process of re-applying for allocations to upgrade existing federal highways connected to the Pan Borneo Highway.
Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the allocations would allow for the federal highways to be on par with the quality and standard of the Pan Borneo.
He explained that there are some 200km of existing highways that are connected to the Pan Borneo Highway throughout the state.
“Before the change of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to Pakatan Harapan (PH), the upgrade was in the tender process before it was ultimately cancelled.
“Now we are in the process of re-applying for allocations,” he told the media at the Temudok Farmers Market here today.
He revealed that part of the 200km highway is located in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
On another note, Fadillah said three rest and recreation (R&R) facilities would be built along the Pan Borneo Highway, which is included in its cost package.
However, he hinted that there might be an increase in the number of R&Rs along the highway built by the state government and the private sector.
“We have received applications from the state government to build more R&Rs along the highway and we will look into this.
“Besides that, we also aim to cater to all existing R&Rs built by the private sector through the provision of proper access roads to these facilities to ensure the safety of all commuters.”
