KUCHING: An additional RM2.5b ln has been allocated to accelerate the economic recovery of small contractors through the implementation of the Pemerkasa stimulus package.
Works Minister Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof on Thursday (March 18) said his ministry welcomed the additional grant, announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
This would increase the allocation for small-scale projects in 2021 from RM2.5 bln to RM5 bln, benefitting G1-G4 contractors affected by the pandemic.
Pemerkasa would also focuse on creating jobs and provide opportunities for small contractors to be involved in the construction sector, especially in infrastructure maintenance.
The package also focused on ensuring equal sharing of projects provided by the government.
These projects included repairing of infrastructure and public facilities damaged by floods, road repairs and social amenity programmes.
Overhaul of stratified housing included replacement of elevators in public housing, as well as construction of stalls in PBT areas would be given to G1 to G4 contractors.
Fadillah said the government would simplify procurement procedures to expedite project implementation and minor works for local contractors.
He said Pemerkasa was a timely initiative to revitalise the country’s economy affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This will ensure the wellbeing of the people, business continuity and economic growth.”
