KUCHING: Several efforts are underway to solve the flash flood problem faced by residents of Lorong Hua Joo Park No. 8 here.
According to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, the residents have been endured flash floods for many years.
“Flooding is from the road junction until the shophouse area where the project signage is located.
“Among the causes: Hua Joo Park main drain not only needs to tackle catchment for Hua Joo Park, but also partial catchment along Jalan Tawi Sli until Jalan Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan and the roadside drain depth is shallow and insufficient capacity.
“Besides that, the culvert is blocked by rubbish and sand and vegetation,” he said on Friday (May 3).
Elaborating further on the efforts, Wee said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) will implement the project which involves upgrading the drains and concrete formwork at Jalan Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan and Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli.
This project, he said, will enlarge the exiting main storm drain along the right hand side of Lorong Hua Joo Park No. 8 and solve the long-term flood issue.
“DID will also introduce a series of on-site detention tanks to store the drain water during rain.
“Meanwhile, for MBKS scope after collaboration with DID, the project is under RMK-12 initiative which went through open tender and was awarded to SBMJ Engineering Sdn Bhd at tender price of RM1,198,988.00,” said Wee.
He added that the scope of the project include enlarging and deepening the drain along the left hand side of Lorong Hua Joo Park and flooded drain in Jalan Hua Joo Park, construct a new culvert to shorten the water flow distance and construct a onside detention drain.
“The project also involve all the siltation material inside existing culvert to be clear to increase culvert capacity and better flow.”
