KUCHING: The relevant authorities, be it local councils or JKR, must always ensure that there is adequate street lighting on all major roads to provide a safe driving experience for the road users, said Micheal Kong, who is special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen.

Kong yesterday said it has been many months since the issue of the lack of street lighting in 7 Mile was brought to the attention of the authorities.

“It is regretted that till today, the lights are still not working especially along Jalan Penrissen as well as the main traffic light at Jalan Liu Shan Bang and Lorong Liu Shan Bang 7.

“I confirmed this matter yesterday evening (Monday) by taking a drive down the said roads by myself.

“With the lack of street lighting coupled with the rain yesterday, even I noticed that the road visibility had decreased accordingly,” he said.

Kong added that needless to say, this would significantly affect the elderly and those with visual impairment.

“I, therefore, urge the authorities to look into this matter with grave urgency and rectify the situation immediately for the safety of the road users,” he said.
