KUCHING: There will be adequate supply of pork in Sarawak for the Chinese New Year celebration, which is less than two weeks away.
Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the state had allowed pork importation from foot-and-mouth disease-free countries to meet local shortage since last year.
“Supply is enough as we continue to import pork from several countries,” he said, adding that Sarawak had imported 2,380 metric tonnes of frozen pork valued at RM26.48mil last year.
“A meeting with the pig farmers and federal Ministry of Domestic Trade and Living Costs will be conducted before Chinese New Year,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on today (Jan 9).
It was previously reported that Sarawak was also proposing the implementation of a price ceiling for pork to prevent further price hike.
The price hike of pork, which started since last year, was due to shortage of supply due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, which had greatly reduced live pig production in Sarawak.
Besides that, the price of animal feed, which used to be RM800 per tonne, is now RM2,000 per tonne.
