KUCHING: Community leaders in Kuching district are urged to get their followers to adopt precision farming concepts such as fertigation and hydroponic in their settlement as a mean to raise income.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said there was always a huge demand for food in the city and these methods were ideal as they did not require much land or labour.
“We can organise the relevant courses to acquaint those interested,” he said when chairing a meeting with 22 Iban “ketua kaum” and “ketua genturong” (settlement chief) in the Kuching District at his office here yesterday.
The group was led by Temenggong Datu Bernard Agan, who is the Kuching Iban community paramount chief and Pemanca John Tambi and six “Penghulu”.
Uggah, who is also the Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, also suggested that the womenfolk too could take up biscuit making and embroidery.

Replying to another issue, Uggah said the Unit for Other Religions or Unifor had ben tasked with scouting for an alternative site for the community new cemetery.
He said although a state land site had been identified and approved by the government in Bau, it had to be shelved due to opposition from local leaders who felt that Bau had already many burial grounds.
