Lenses were originally made of glass, but with technological advancements, other materials are now being used.  To know more about our writer Vicky’s experience at ZEISS, the world’s leading precision optics manufacturer that combines technical expertise and innovative ideas to create exceptional visual experiences. Pictured is Vicky going through ZEISS’ nine-step eye check process.

Eye care experience at ZEISS

When it comes to eyeglasses, we tend to prioritise the frame that best suits our faces.

Little do we realise that enough time and money should be spent on understanding our eyes’ health before even considering lens material, coating, and design options.

When a friend recently approached me about getting an eye test with a lens expert, I told her, “I just go to my usual optician.”

I called her back a few days later and asked her about it. I was not only interested in the tests conducted by the world’s leading precision optics manufacturer ZEISS, but it was also past time for me to seek a second opinion because typo errors in texting seemed to be on the rise.

There are 254 ZEISS Vision Centers in 38 countries worldwide. There are five such centres in Malaysia, the largest of which is located in the Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur and the Spring Mall in Kuching.

These are expected to grow in response to consumer demand for digitalised precision vision checks and a seamless optometry retail experience.

The centre supports independent eye care professionals in their work through a digital technology network that is linked to 45,000 data points worldwide.

Aside from the latest trends in frame design, the brand boasts innovative and customised ZEISS precision lenses.

Best of all, one can be taken through a nine-step consumer centric consultation process known as the ‘My Vision Experience by ZEISS’.

Yours truly was the only media representative from East Malaysia at the October launch of this unique ZEISS vision experience by Kevin Siew, owner of Eyez Optometry Group, along with Rolf Hermann, Head of Marketing and Brand Experience, Carl Zeiss International GmbH; Vincent Mathieu, Head of Asia-C Region (Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South East Asia) ZEISS Vision Care; and Paul Ho, Head of ZEISS Vision Care SBU South East Asia.

“The ZEISS Vision Center at Gardens Mall is equipped with cutting-edge ZEISS instruments such as the VISUPHOR 500, VISUSCREEN, Visufit 1000, and i.Profiler Plus, providing our customers with a step-by-step process for identifying their needs and customising the perfect fit and solution in both lenses and frames for their eyes and face. Together with our team of professional optometrists, we provide one of the most advanced in vision care technology and innovation right here in Malaysia,” said Siew.

The ZEISS i.Profiler Plus will be used to generate an in-depth profile of an individual’s “eye map” as part of the initial steps in the “My Vision Experience by ZEISS.”

This evaluates over 1,500 points of the eye to determine both a day and night vision profile.

When this information is combined with individual pupil size, better contrast lenses for improved night and dusk vision can be recommended.

New Sarawak Tribune was chosen as one of three media outlets to test out this visual experience in KL.

I walked around, a little anxious, looking at interesting eye frames first. Again, we tend to prioritise frames over the importance of lenses.

Designer brands from Europe, the United States, Japan, and Korea were all neatly displayed.

One pair caught my eye because the frames were not only fashionable but also made of materials that are hypoallergenic.

“Only after all relevant information about a patient’s eyes has been obtained can the most accurate lenses be prescribed. The ZEISS i.Profiler Plus can generate such a detailed visual profile,” said Hermann.

I did have my eyes checked using the ZEISS i.Profiler, a 4-in-1 compact system that combines an ocular wavefront aberrometer, autorefractometer, ATLAS corneal topographer, and keratometer in a single device.

Anyway, during my eye exam, I could see the blood vessels surrounding my eyes on a screen. In my right eye, a capillary was noticeably redder.

“One of the causes is a lack of sleep,” said the optometrist.

Stylish glasses appear cool, but are they right for you? At ZEISS, an avatar can be created to determine which frames suit your face and are a better fit.

Indeed, I had been writing late into the night, likely depriving my eyes of sufficient oxygen.

I was relieved to learn that my eyes were in good health. There were no signs of diabetes, hypertension, tumours, or early blindness.

I only needed to correct my short sightedness and mild astigmatism (an imperfection in the curvature of the eye that causes blurry vision), which were most likely caused by long hours of staring at computer screens.

The Visufit 1000 featured a virtual try-on in 3D, which provides a wealth of options for choosing frames.

I could try on frames and compare them. The avatar experience was surprising because the very pair of frames that caught my eye while browsing was one of the recommended options.

Did I get my glasses made at ZEISS?

After some thought, I went ahead and did it. Most people, like me, will buy a beautiful pair of eyeglasses but hesitate on the lens.

From what I had learned that afternoon, it was clear to me that getting a new, ideal pair of lenses was essential.

Nobody can deny that our eyes are one of our most important features. There is no excuse, and there is a need to protect our eyes!
